Dredgers

As dredgers increase in size, power, precision and sophistication, Bureau Veritas helps you innovate safely and achieve compliance.

Supporting innovation in dredgers

Dredgers are built to fulfill a range of needs, from maintenance dredging and keeping waterways navigable, to land reclamation and activities relating to port construction, coastal engineering and offshore subsea construction.

As owners seek greater productivity, dredgers have increased in size and power, creating new demands in terms of safety and compliance. Owners are also taking advantage of dynamic positioning for dredgers to increase precision and reduce maneuvering time, while seeking solutions that improve fuel efficiency and reduce emissions.

How we support you

Bureau Veritas is the leading classification society for dredgers. We are at the forefront of innovation, classing a wide range of designs with various state-of-the-art propulsion systems.

The #1 class society for dredgers

Bureau Veritas is the classification society of choice for over a third of dredgers in existence, making us the leader in this highly specialized market segment. Our history of classing dredgers goes back a long way: we published our first technical requirements for dredgers in 1909.

RULES FOR HOPPER DREDGERS, CUTTER SUCTION DREDGERS, DRY DREDGERS & MORE

Rules for hopper dredgers, cutter suction dredgers, dry dredgers and more

Bureau Veritas offers comprehensive rules covering all types of dredger ship designs. These include trailing suction hopper dredgers, cutter suction dredgers, dry dredgers, dipper dredgers and water injection dredgers stone dumping vessels. Our Rules are based on in-service experience and research projects that address specific issues relating to dredger stability, structural arrangement, design loads and hull strength.

Statutory Compliance for dredgers - Ship Classification - Bureau Veritas

Full statutory compliance

Our expertise and involvement in the development of international regulations and guidelines enable us to support owners’ compliance with statutory requirements applicable to dredgers. These include standard regulations (i.e., SOLAS, ICLL, MARPOL) as well as Guidelines for the Assignment of Reduced Freeboards for Dredgers.

Improved environmental protection

Dredgers often operate in Environmental Control Areas, leading owners to investigate solutions that reduce emissions. Bureau Veritas classed the Minerva, the first-ever LNG-fueled trailing suction hopper dredger, and is currently classing an LNG-fueled cutter suction dredger. We have previously classed innovative designs that improve fuel efficiency by optimizing hull shape or using two-speed propulsion drive.

dredger ship classification - SPECIALIST NOTATION FOR DYNAMIC POSITIONING

Specialist notation for Dynamic Positioning

Station keeping is paramount for dredgers engaged in high-precision subsea operations, particularly when working in waves or swell. Bureau Veritas offers the DYNAPOS family of class notations, which cover the certification of dynamic positioning systems.

Dredges Ship Classification - Improving operational Flexibility

Increased operational flexibility

A major technical development in regulations was the introduction of operating areas, which created the necessary link between reduced dredging freeboard and longitudinal strength. Based on technical studies by Bureau Veritas, operating areas can be extended on the basis of the maximum significant wave height associated with the operating area notation of the dredger, which increases dredgers’ operational flexibility.

ADDRESSING CYBER SECURITY

Intelligent data and real-time, connected equipment have made a world of difference for dredger operations. At the same time, digitalization also poses new problems for the shipping industry. Sophisticated—and often successful—cyber-attacks are a reality worldwide. As a result, ship owners and managers must understand that cyber security is integral to safety management in shipping and offshore operations.

Bureau Veritas takes cyber security seriously, identifying it as a key challenge for shipping. Our next-level cyber security services leverage decades of expertise across the maritime industry, including smart ships, networks, telecommunications, ship design, and safety and security of ship operations. We offer:

  • Cyber compliance, detailed notations, and practical guidelines for both ships in service and new buildings
  • A global network of cybersecurity experts to secure your design
  • Leading regulation compliance (BIMCO, Flag administration, IACS, ICS, IMO, OCIMF and more)
