Dry Cargo Ships

No matter the shape, contents or special features of a dry cargo vessel, Bureau Veritas has the expertise to evaluate your ship’s design, and ensure its seaworthiness. Our aim: to ensure cargo of all sizes arrives safely at its destination.

Safety and stability for all types of cargo

Demand from owners for versatile, multi-purpose ships that maximize cargo capacity is higher than ever. Longevity and stability are top concerns, as the designs are complex (i.e., heavy cargo gear, multiple decks) with parts of the ship subject to high stress, fatigue, and potential mechanical damage.

Particular loading cases can also pose significant problems. When specialized cargo is carried, vessels may require customized analysis and certification to safeguard structure, stability and safety.

How we support you

From conception through construction and operation, Bureau Veritas analyzes and improves your dry cargo vessels. Our classification and value-add services, supported by industry-leading software, maximize capacity while ensuring structural integrity and stability.

Maximizing cargo capacity

Many vessels have specific trading routes and port restrictions, which impact their design. This leads owners to order small and tailored ships. Bureau Veritas’ design review services support sophisticated new designs that maximize cargo capacity.

Evaluating new designs

Bureau Veritas can evaluate proposed designs of new vessels for strength, durability, stability, and safety. With our extensive assessment process, you can rest assured that a Concept Approval by Bureau Veritas will serve as a watertight blueprint for your next vessel. Our dedicated Rules for the use of LNG as marine fuel also support the design of ships able to operate in Emission Control Areas.

Addressing project cargo risk

Large pieces of industrial equipment are frequently shipped onboard cargo ships. Given the weight and sometimes unusual shapes of these pieces, specific assessments are required to ensure cargo vessels are properly prepared. With our Marine Warranty surveys, we can assess the risk of each operation.

Dedicated ice notations

Bureau Veritas offers a full range of classification services to prepare your vessel for safe travel through icy and polar waters. ICE CLASS, POLAR CLASS, and cold climate notations are available for both general cargo and multipurpose cargo ships.

ADDRESSING CYBER SECURITY

While greatly advancing dry cargo operations, intelligent data and real-time, connected equipment have also posed new challenges. Digitalization leaves ships prone to cyber attacks, particularly when the industry has not fully recognized the importance of implementing cyber security.

At Bureau Veritas, we understand that cyber security is integral to safety management in shipping and offshore operations. To provide leading cyber security services, we have leveraged our expertise in all areas of the maritime industry, from smartships and networks to telecommunications, ship design, and safety. Bureau Veritas clients operate more safely with our:

  • Global network of cybersecurity experts to secure ship designs
  • Cyber compliance, practical guidelines and detailed notations for ships in service and newbuilds
  • Leading regulation compliance for BIMCO, IACS, ICS, IMO, OCIMF, Flag administration and more
