Introducing Doo-Sung

Kim Doo-Sung is a surveyor working for the new construction department of Marine & Offshore operation group. As an Asian female surveyor in a male-dominated industry, she takes pride in promoting every day, through her work, more gender balance in this field.

Please describe your job as surveyor?

As a surveyor my role is to make sure that new ships construction conforms with structure, outfitting, coating systems as well as cargo containment systems adhere to national and international standards. I do so within the scope of TPA, Verification & Certifying Authority and Classification Society.

What challenges do you face in your day-to-day work?

The most significant challenge I face in this role is keeping track with new technologies and corresponding regulations. For example, lately I have had to understand new types of engines and fuel supply systems for greener ships. I have also had to study the updated Energy Efficient Design Index (EEDI) phase and Inventory of Hazardous Materials (IHM), reworked in compliance with EU Ship Recycling Regulation, the Hong Kong Convention and International Maritime Organisation (IMO) Guidelines.

While this may be difficult at times, it is also extremely rewarding to face and conquer such challenges.

What opportunities have helped you develop your career?

From the start of my career at Bureau Veritas I have had the chance to work with passionate managers devoted to the development and growth of their employees. Combined with a strong sense of responsibility in meeting obligations and expectations placed upon me, this has allowed me to continue challenging myself and expand my horizons

The passion and devotion of my managers has been a real driving force for me, but not the only one. Shipping is a very male-dominated industry, so I take pride in being an Asian female using my strengths and reliability to ensure the safety of our customers but also for the greater goal of promoting gender balance in this field.
