Introducing Guojian
As Head of the Advanced Technology Research Centre (ATRC) which belongs to the Innovation & Technical development Centre in Shanghai, Guojian is proud to be facilitating Bureau Veritas’ clients’ access to the latest technologies to facilitate design whilst ensuring safety and building trust.
Please describe your job as Head of Advanced Technology and Research Centre (ATRC)?
The role of the ATRC is to support our teams in pre-contract Joint Development Project (JED) activities. We get involved in the early design stages of the project in order to support: our clients in the development of innovative and/or optimized designs; our colleagues at the Local Plan-approval Office for the drawing review.
My role, as Head of the ATRC, is to ensure that we carry out all the necessary tasks to support our clients and our colleagues, fostering trust and promoting safety. We do so by working on advanced Finite Element Method (FEM) analysis, hydroelastic analysis, and Computational Fluid Dynamics. I am also responsible for making sure that we continuously support our Chinese clients with their digital transformation and their SMARTSHIP development.
What challenges do you face in your day-to-day work?
The main challenge I face in my day-to-day work is constant improvement. Every day I want to make sure that I am even stronger than the day before, that I have developed and implemented the best tools and methods to foster a happy and productive working environment. And I want to make sure, every day, that at the ATRC we continue to share our knowledge and grow, both as a team and as individuals, to reach our common goal of providing our clients and colleagues with all the support they need.

Bureau Veritas M&O
People at Bureau Veritas are encouraged to explore many different pathways in their professional development. This provides a unique opportunity for constant development whilst working to build trust and responsibility to help achieve Bureau Veritas’ goals.
What opportunities have helped you develop your career?
I started my career at Bureau Veritas as Hull structural engineer in the Shanghai VeriSTAR Centre. One year later, I was offered the opportunity to move to Paris and work at the Bureau Veritas Head Office on offshore structure FEM analysis and conversion assessment. The three years in Paris have been an incredible opportunity to grow both personally and professionally, gathering new knowledge and learning new skills.
I believe it is a combination of the experience in Paris and my background that made me the ideal candidate for the position of Head of the Innovation & Optimisation unit when the ATRC opened in Shanghai in 2014. And finally, in August 2021 I was promoted to head of the ATRC, an opportunity that allows me to continue to grow, as a person, as a professional individual and as part of a team.
Why do you recommend working for Bureau Veritas Marine & Offshore?
Bureau Veritas is a particularly attractive environment to work in because it promotes flexibility and sharing. As my experience across different departments and different countries/continents highlights, people at Bureau Veritas are encouraged to explore many different pathways in their professional development. This provides a unique opportunity for constant development whilst working to build trust and responsibility to help achieve Bureau Veritas’ goals.
What do you enjoy most about working for Bureau Veritas Marine & Offshore?
What I enjoy most at Bureau Veritas is the opportunity to work with knowledge and technologies that are in constant development and evolution. While I started working with FEM analysis, I have since been able to use new technologies and tools to accomplish new projects and bring these tools to our clients. This not only makes me feel as though I am constantly being challenged and, therefore, growing, but also that I am contributing to bringing the best expertise Bureau Veritas has to offer to its clients to constantly renew our trust in each other.
