GTT’s Innovative Square-Shaped LNG Fuel Tank Concept Receives AiP from Bureau Veritas
Sep. 12 2025
Bureau Veritas Marine & Offshore (BV), a world leader in testing, inspection and certification, has awarded an Approval in Principle (AiP) to GTT for its new square-shaped LNG fuel tank concept, GTT CUBIQ™, a design that eliminates upper and lower chamfers. This breakthrough innovation simplifies construction and reduces costs compared to previous GTT membrane systems, such as those fitted on ultra-large container ships.
Historically, LNG fuel tanks using membrane containment systems have featured large upper chamfers and smaller lower chamfers to limit sloshing effects and pressure impacts. GTT CUBIQ™ removes chamfers altogether, creating a fully square tank that not only eases construction but also lowers costs while continuing to meet the most stringent safety and performance standards.
The AiP granted by BV covers the structural aspects of this concept, with particular attention to liquid motion and sloshing effects. This square tank concept can be fitted with both GTT’s Mark III and NO96 membrane containment systems, with appropriate structural adjustments, and cofferdams are included on all four sides to ensure safe separation between cargo and fuel. The AiP assessment was carried out in accordance with the International Code of Safety for Ships Using Gases or Other Low-flashpoint Fuels (IGF Code), the Bureau Veritas Rules for the Classification of Steel Ships, and relevant Bureau Veritas Rule Notes and Guidance Notes related to LNG fuel systems and sloshing load assessments.
Philippe Berterottière, Chairman and CEO of GTT, said: “We are honored by Bureau Veritas’ continued confidence in our technologies. This innovative square-shaped design marks a significant improvement for the LNG container ship segment. By streamlining construction, optimizing cargo capacity, and delivering tangible benefits for both ship-owners and shipyards, it reaffirms our commitment to advancing efficiency and competitiveness across the industry.”
