Bureau Veritas supports shipowner cyber compliance with Letter of Attestation for new technology from MicroSec

Dec. 9 2024

The LoA comes as BV and MicroSec celebrate the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding.

Bureau Veritas Marine & Offshore (BV), a global leader in testing, inspection, and certification, has awarded MicroSec, a leader in operational technology (OT) cybersecurity, a Letter of Attestation (LoA) for its CyberAssessor tool, designed to support shipowners to remain compliant with the International Association of Classification Society (IACS) UR E26 “Cyber Resilience of Ships” requirements. UR E26 represents the most stringent cybersecurity requirement for new builds and also guides ship owners and operators to enable continuous cybersecurity readiness for their existing vessels and fleets.

The CyberAssessor tool allows shipbuilders to generate UR E26 compliant reports during the commissioning phase, as well as for ship owners during the operational life of the ship. This fulfills UR E26’s annual assessment requirement, making the CyberAssessor tool an essential resource for helping ensure continuous compliance. Critically, achieving this validation supports that shipbuilders and vessel owners can rely on the accuracy and effectiveness of MicroSec’s CyberAssessor reports, whilst fleet operators can rely on the tool to maintain and verify ongoing compliance and continuous monitoring of cyber security threats.

BV employed a rigorous evaluation process to analyze how MicroSec’s CyberAssessor tool maps cybersecurity practices against the UR E26 standard, helping ensure that MicroSec’s platform provides accurate and trustworthy assessments.

The LoA is the latest in a close partnership between MicroSec and BV. In that spirit, MicroSec and BV have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) affirming both organization’s commitment to increased collaboration, cooperations and interaction for the development and understanding of cyber security. The purpose of the MoU is to work together to develop new technologies, projects, and policies that will support the advancement of cyber security within the maritime industry.

With the increase in cyber threats targeting maritime vessels and fleets, maintaining a robust cybersecurity posture is essential. The Cybersecurity Evaluation Report generated by MicroSec’s CyberAssessor gives shipbuilders, ship operators, and fleet managers confidence that they will satisfy the UR E26 standards and protect their vessels from cyber risks.

Dr. Vishram Mishra, CEO of MicroSec, said: “In addition to compliance, our CyberAssessor tool provides comprehensive insights into the cybersecurity health of a fleet, helping ship operators and builders address risks proactively, and combined with Bureau Veritas’s expertise in the industry, it strengthens our common mission to offer comprehensive, validated, and reliable solutions that take the industry to the next level.”

Overall, MicroSec's strong partnership with BV demonstrates its commitment to its customers, enabling compliance with standards like UR E26, whilst promoting excellence in global cybersecurity standards.
