OceanWings Receives Approval in Principle from Bureau Veritas for Innovative Wind Propulsion System “Rigid Tiltable Wingsail (OW RT)”
Nov. 21 2024
OceanWings, an industrial company that designs and delivers Wind Assisted Propulsion Systems (WAPS), has been awarded an Approval in Principle (AIP) from Bureau Veritas Marine & Offshore (BV), a global leader in Testing, Inspection and Certification (TIC), for its cutting-edge Rigid Tiltable Wingsail (OW RT) technology. The approval was awarded during the SNAME Wind propulsion conference, in Athens.
Jointly organized by the Greek Section of SNAME and the Research Institute of Sweden (RISE), the event brought together prominent ship owners, ship managers, and ship operators to discuss the significant opportunities that developing wind-assisted technologies can provide in supporting the industry’s efforts to reduce their carbon emissions.
The OW RT system has been specifically designed for installation, as part of both newbuild and retrofit projects, on tankers, chemical tankers, bulk carriers, and ROPAX vessels with either air draft limitation or port operation constraints. The technology allows for navigating under bridges and entering port infrastructure seamlessly due to its compact foldable wingsail. The solution also offers enhanced upwind performance and thrust-to-weight ratio and promises to deliver fuel and emissions savings, to support EEXI and CII compliance.
This significant milestone highlights the collaborative journey between OceanWings and Bureau Veritas, which began with the successful development of the Canopée project, a pioneering hybrid industrial wind powered cargo ship. This new AIP signals not only a step forward in the advancement of OceanWings' technology but also marks a continuation of its commitment to fuel efficiency and emissions reduction in maritime transportation.
