Bureau Veritas Asia Pacific Committee Meeting Explores the Forces Reshaping Shipping and the Path Forward
Apr. 13 2026
Bureau Veritas Marine & Offshore convened its Asia Pacific Committee meeting in Okinawa on April 10 under the theme “Future Shipping Forum,” bringing together senior leaders from across the maritime ecosystem to examine the forces reshaping the industry and their implications for the future.
The discussions reflected a shared recognition that the maritime sector is entering a period of profound transformation. The Asia-Pacific region — bringing together shipowners, shipyards, financiers and innovators —remains central to this evolution and continues to play a defining role in shaping global shipping dynamics.
Opening the meeting, Alex Gregg-Smith, President of Bureau Veritas Marine & Offshore, reaffirmed the organization’s ambition to become a preferred partner to its clients by combining technical excellence with a strong commitment to listening and collaboration. He emphasized the importance of supporting clients in navigating an increasingly complex and fast-evolving maritime environment.
The Committee welcomed a distinguished group of international speakers whose perspectives reflected the breadth of challenges facing the industry. Takeshi Hashimoto, Chairman of Mitsui O.S.K. Lines and Chairman of the Bureau Veritas Asia Pacific Committee, shared his outlook on the evolving shipping landscape. Dr. Ryuichi Shibasaki, Associate Professor at the Graduate School of Engineering, the University of Tokyo, analyzed the impact of geopolitics on trade flows, while Dr. Shivani Sathish, Co-Founder of Atierra, an Okinawa-based biofuels company, provided insight into the challenges of developing biofuels for aviation and shipping.
A broader geopolitical and energy perspective was provided by Michal Kurtyka, former Polish Minister of Energy, Climate and Environment and President of COP24, while insights into shipbuilding dynamics were provided by Francois Cadiou of BRS-Paris. Johannah Christensen, CEO of the Global Maritime Forum, discussed the possibilities for the shipping industry to shape its own future — even in a world where challenges to the energy transition were mounting. These discussions were complemented by Bureau Veritas experts Olivier Cartier and Suba Sivandran, who explored the evolving role of classification and practical pathways to support decarbonization and innovation.
Across the sessions, participants examined the interplay between geopolitical fragmentation, accelerating digitalization and the transition towards lower-carbon shipping. While these forces are increasing complexity, they are also creating opportunities for innovation and new business models. The discussions emphasized the need for pragmatic, balanced approaches to ensure progress towards sustainability remains aligned with operational and economic realities.
Bureau Veritas also highlighted its commitment to supporting clients through its Future Shipping Team, a global network of experts delivering practical guidance and forward-looking solutions across the maritime value chain.
The meeting concluded with a shared recognition that collaboration, technical expertise and innovation will be essential to navigating uncertainty and shaping the future of shipping. Through the Asia Pacific Committee, Bureau Veritas continues to foster dialogue and partnership, supporting a more resilient, efficient and sustainable maritime sector.
