HYVOLUTION 2024: SHARING EXPERTISE TO ADVANCE HYDROGEN DEPLOYMENT

HYVOLUTION 2024: SHARING EXPERTISE TO ADVANCE HYDROGEN DEPLOYMENT

Feb. 13 2024 - 3 min

From January 30th to February 1st, 2024, Paris played host to the Hyvolution trade show – a global hub for all things hydrogen. Bureau Veritas joined over 500 hydrogen suppliers and customers, economic players, political leaders and institutions for a packed program of forums, conferences and interactive sessions on the future of hydrogen.

The hype around hydrogen

Hydrogen as an alternative energy vector is a hot topic for both industry and mobility, with over 50 countries having already approved hydrogen roadmaps. Hydrogen was equally high on the agenda at COP28. The climate summit made progress toward initiatives including the acceleration of cross-border trade and mutual recognition of renewable and low-carbon hydrogen certification schemes.

Sharing expert insights

Bureau Veritas and Bureau Veritas Marine & Offshore experts joined forces at our booth. Together, they shared their combined expertise of the full hydrogen value chain, from production to storage, transportation and distribution, and usage in various types of mobility by land and sea.

The BV booth hosted “Meet the experts” sessions with Julien Boulland, Global Market Leader Sustainable Shipping, and Patrick Jan, Expertise Leader – Environment Innovative Engines and Alternative Fuels. The sessions were an opportunity for customers and stakeholders to learn more about Bureau Veritas’ newly released NR 678 Rules for hydrogen-fueled ships. The Rules outline technical requirements for the safe bunkering, storage, preparation, distribution and use of hydrogen as fuel for power generation on board ships.

Recognizing promising new developments

Hydrogen transportation – particularly maritime transportation – is a lively sector and Bureau Veritas is playing an active role in its development.

Hyvolution was the setting for an Approval in Principle (AiP) hand-over ceremony for an exciting 150,000 m3 liquid hydrogen carrier project by GTT, TotalEnergies and LMG Marin. The vessel will be fitted with GTT’s membrane-type containment system. The AiP is the outcome of a risk assessment and design review conducted in accordance with the relevant regulatory requirements and Bureau Veritas know-how.

Bureau Veritas Marine & Offshore

Hyvolution was an excellent opportunity to celebrate innovative new hydrogen projects and promote industry collaboration. For me, one of the most interesting insights was the development of hydrogen equipment makers into the maritime market. As demand for hydrogen in the maritime sector grows, land-based hydrogen experience is invaluable to guide the transition to hydrogen as a marine fuel.

By your side throughout the maritime deployment of hydrogen

Whatever their industry sector, participants left Hyvolution with a strengthened sense of collaboration toward the shared aim to develop the hydrogen value chain. With our dedicated hydrogen Rules and value chain expertise, we’re by your side to support the scaling-up of fuel availability and the safe application of new technologies to enable shipping’s eventual transition to hydrogen.
