Introducing:
Clementine Sarrazin

Please describe your job as an Apprentice Naval Structural Engineer.

My job as an engineering apprentice is to review ship plans and verify hull structure compliance with BV Rules. I do this in conjunction with my engineering studies at the Polytech Sorbonne, where I’m a student. 

What challenges do you face in your day-to-day work?

As an apprentice, I’m still adapting to the range of projects managed by my team. One day I’ll be updating spreadsheets, and the next I’m accompanying my supervisor to an onboard assessment for one of Bureau Veritas’ biggest clients. There’s a great deal of internal and external communication to keep up with, and I’m always taking in new information. 

What opportunities have helped you develop your career?

As part of the Hull Design team, I’ve been able to improve my understanding of regulations and compliance for marine vessels. Working with a multicultural team has also helped me improve my English, which is crucial when working at an international organization.

As a student, you can gain experience working with diverse teams of experts, and get insight from managers with a hands-on approach to teaching. Other members of my team are genuinely interested in my journey from apprentice to engineer, and I’m always learning from their expertise.

What do you enjoy most about working for Bureau Veritas Marine & Offshore?

I’m excited to be doing my apprenticeship for a leader in the maritime industry, where I can develop my professional skills and become a fully-fledged engineer. I enjoy the day-to-day tasks, challenges and projects that come my way, and my supervisors’ readiness to share their knowledge and experience with me.
