IACS shares new guidelines for CII calculation and coordination with SEEMP

The International Association of Classification Societies (IACS) has published guidelines to aid shipowners and charterers in calculating and verifying their CII ahead of the first reporting year in 2024. The guidelines also help clarify how CII will impact the update and revision of a vessel’s SEEMP Part III.

Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII) values  are one of the key performance indicators of ship energy performance under the International Maritime Organization (IMO) short-term measures to reduce carbon intensity. The Ship Energy Efficiency Management Plan (SEEMP) Part III  is a tool that helps monitor and improve the energy performance of vessels to remain compliant over time.

Since January 1, 2023, shipowners have had to complete and verify their SEEMP Part III for each vessel. From January to March 2024, they will also need to calculate and report their attained CII values and evaluate the rating. In certain cases, based on the rating results, the SEEMP will need to be revised to incorporate a plan of corrective actions.

IACS’s new guidelines on CII and SEEMP are intended to help guide owners and charterers through this new process, which includes:

• The calculation of attained CII values including corrective factors and voyage adjustment
• The CII value verification and rating process
• Company audits
• Updates and revisions of their SEEMP Part III

IACS members, including Bureau Veritas, hope that their guidelines will enable operators to better understand the measures put in place by the IMO with the aim of ensuring that their vessels fulfill all energy efficiency and decarbonization requirements. The full guidelines are available here¹.

Bureau Veritas’ tool VeriSTAR Green  can be used to calculate CII values, as well as to develop a SEEMP Part II and Part III.
