3D CLASSIFICATION
A collaborative digital platform for classification
While shipyards increasingly use 3D models of ships to facilitate vessel design and construction, the classification process has largely remained 2D. This requires stakeholders to switch between 2D drawings and 3D models, making for a time-consuming design and review process.
Bureau Veritas developed 3D Classification to give clients a cost- and time-efficient approach to ship classification. This digital platform features an improved design review experience that enables real-time collaboration among stakeholders.
3D Classification relies on the open digital standard, Open Class exchange (OCX), to facilitate the sharing of structured ship design data between shipyards, designers and classification societies, reducing manual data re-entry and improving interoperability across the maritime ecosystem.
What are the key benefits of 3D Classification?
Improved data quality for design review
Using a 3D model reduces the risk of errors and inconsistencies, improves data quality and safety, and limits lead times and costs.
Integrated digital platform for end-to-end design review
Bureau Veritas has developed an integrated digital platform to support the classification review process – from 3D model submission by designers and shipyards to hull design review. The platform links uploaded 3D models with Bureau Veritas calculation tools, enables seamless collaboration between customers and BV experts, and centralizes comments, decisions and classification outcomes in one location.
Increased collaboration
The collaborative 3D Classification platform makes hull structure design review more efficient. Authorized stakeholders, including surveyors, shipyards and clients, can access the platform simultaneously to exchange information, review class comments and address 3D models in real time.
What does the future of 3D Classification look like?
Our experts at Bureau Veritas are expanding 3D Classification to include new features, such as fire safety, stability and machinery requirements.
Shipowners and managers will also retain access to their asset’s digital twin throughout its lifecycle. This will ensure “3D continuity” from construction to operation and help owners keep their assets safe and compliant.
