OPERA: Linear and non-linear station-keeping and marine operations analyses

Release Date

Version Number1.0.3

Developed over ten years by Bureau Veritas, OPERA is a time domain analysis software including static and modal capabilities. It facilitates station-keeping assessments of offshore assets, particularly floating wind turbines. With OPERA, users can account for loads and mechanical non-linearities, aero-hydro coupling, large displacement, dynamic response, mooring lines and soil interaction.

What challenges does OPERA address?

OPERA is a general mechanical solver compatible with range of floating assets, but it has particular specialized applications for floating offshore wind turbines.

While industry demand for renewable electricity from offshore wind farms accelerates, floating offshore wind turbine designers must resolve the complex physics of aero-hydro coupling and multibody interactions. Everything – from the blades to the mooring system – must be taken into account with the harsh environmental conditions of deep waters. There is a clear industry need to perform advanced simulations, both to de-risk and optimize projects.

As such, OPERA has been specifically developed to account for the most advanced assessments of offshore asset behavior, in terms of seakeeping, station-keeping and aero-hydro coupling.

What does OPERA offer?

  • Comprehensive modeling and analysis OPERA enables users to fully understand and de-risk even the most innovative designs. ItsIntegrated Load Analysis accounts for all types of couplings and its resolution algorithms are the subject of continuous improvement by our dedicated team.
  • User-friendly interface OPERA features an integrated and customizable post-process with 3D animation and clear and intuitive model building. Its script capabilities enable parametric studies and optimization procedures. OPERA delivers fast, reliable answers to any request, with support from our team.
  • Ease of integration OPERA can be run on parallel computing services both locally and remotely, and users will be able to integrate it will future advanced performance analysis tools from Bureau Veritas.
  • Support from design through commercialization OPERA enables the independent design verification of complex floating offshore projects. It is an essential tool to shape trust in new technologies, and facilitate the commercialization of floating offshore wind projects.
