SDC 9 finalized amendments to SOLAS Reg. II-I/3-4 on emergency towing equipment, as well as the Guidelines for underwater radiated noise from shipping and finally amendments to the MODU Codes to prohibit the use of materials containing asbestos. SDC 9 also adopted new UIs related to SOLAS.

The Sub-Committee on Ship Design and Construction was held in person in London (23-27 January 2022) with hybrid facilities allowing remote participation.

SDC 9 finalized : 

  • amendments to SOLAS regulation II-1/3-4 on Application of emergency towing equipment for ship types other than tankers, for their adoption by MSC and possible entry into force 1st January 2028 (new ships over 20 000 GT) ; 
  • Revised Guidelines for the reduction of underwater radiated noise from shipping (revised MEPC.1/Circ.833) for approval by MEPC 80 (July 2023) ; 
  • amendments to the 1979, 1989 and 2009 MODU Codes to prohibit materials which contain asbestos onboard MODU, for adoption at MSC 107 (June 2023) and entry into force on 1 January 2024. 

SDC 9 adopted : 

  • new Unified Interpretations (UI) and revisions to existing UI related to SOLAS regulations. 

SDC 9 made progress on the following topics : 

  • updating the Guidelines on alternative design and arrangements for SOLAS chapter II-1, in relation to Part C and E; 
  • revision of the Interim Explanatory Notes (MSC.1/Circ.1369) supporting the industry in the application of the safe return to port concept.
