Hanwha Ocean and Bureau Veritas Launch Joint Development Project for 174,000m3 Membrane-Type LNG Carrier Vessel Design Verification

Feb. 2 2026

Hanwha Ocean Co., Ltd (Hanwha Ocean) and Bureau Veritas Marine & Offshore (BV) have launched Joint Development Project (JDP) for the development of a 174,000m3 membrane-type LNG carrier (174K LNGC). This collaboration represents another milestone in the long-standing partnership between Hanwha Ocean and BV, combining their expertise to advance cutting-edge LNG carrier technology with a strong focus on safety, efficiency, and structural integrity.

Hanwha Ocean's new hull design will be meticulously developed to anticipate and meet future market demand for high-capacity LNG carriers. Through advanced hull optimization and enhanced structural design, the new concept improves performance and maximizes cargo capacity beyond the capabilities of Hanwha Ocean’s existing 174K LNGC design, contributing to optimized capital expenditure and reduced operational expenditure.

Under this JDP, the hull design of Hanwha Ocean’s 174K LNGC design will be reviewed in accordance with BV’s requirements and applicable regulations. The project aims to validate structural reliability and support the development of a highly robust and future-ready LNG carrier design.

Jeoung-Sun Lee, Senior Vice President of Basic Design Department at Hanwha Ocean, Co., Ltd., said: “The new 174K LNGC has been developed with an optimized hull and strengthened structural design to maximize performance and safety. Through this JDP with BV, we look forward to confirming the vessel’s structural reliability.”
