ESTRIN 2023

The European Standard laying down Technical Requirements for Inland Navigation vessels -ESTRIN 2023- will enter into force on 01.01.2024 and is presently available.

ES-TRIN 2023 will enter into force on 01.01.2024, as a technical annex for both European Directive ED/2016/1629 and Rhine Rules.

ES-TRIN 2023 is presently available in four languages (French, English, German and Dutch) on https://www.cesni.eu/en/standards-and-explanatory-notices/ .

This new edition of the Standard will replace the 2021 edition.

Until 01.01.2024 the ES-TRIN 2021 must be applied; but for new construction it may be useful to look to the new and/or modified prescriptions. 

The main amendments concern the following areas: 

  • Life jackets,
  • After-treatment systems of internal combustion engines,
  • Waste-water collection,
  • Permanently installed firefighting systems for protecting objects (article 13.06),
  • Materials complying with the equivalent regulations instead of the Code of Fire Test Procedures (new ESI-III-11),
  • Passenger vessels (several amendements),
  • Recreational craft,
  • Electric propulsion engines aft of the aft-peak bulkhead,
  • Repair of engines in service (new article 9.10),
  • Retractable wheelhouses (new article 7.14),
  • Radar navigation installations and rate-of-turn indicators,
  • Updating of references to the ES-RIS 2023/1,
  • Special anchors with reduced mass,
  • Low flashpoint fuels and fuel cells (Chapter 30; Annex 8).
