Bureau Veritas grants AiP to H-DEUX FlexiCapture onboard carbon capture concept

Bureau Veritas Marine & Offshore (BV) has completed a Level 1 Approval in Principle (AiP) assessment of H-DEUX's FlexiCapture, a modular onboard carbon capture concept designed to capture carbon dioxide (CO₂) from marine engine exhaust gases.
Developed by H-DEUX, FlexiCapture uses a solid-sorbent adsorption process in which fixed-bed reactors operate cyclically between CO₂ capture and regeneration. Conditioned exhaust gas passes through a reactor in the capture phase, where CO₂ is selectively adsorbed, while regeneration takes place in parallel. Waste heat recovered from the engine exhaust provides the thermal energy required for regeneration, with the reactors alternating between the two phases to enable continuous treatment of the exhaust gas stream.
According to H-DEUX, the combination of its solid-sorbent technology and process configuration can reduce equipment volume by approximately 77% and weight by 66% compared with conventional amine-based carbon capture systems. These characteristics are intended to address two important constraints for onboard applications – available space and weight – while providing shipowners with an additional technology pathway to support the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions from vessels operating on conventional fuels.
As part of the AiP assessment, BV reviewed the FlexiCapture concept against the applicable requirements of its NR467 Rules, including provisions relevant to onboard carbon capture systems and its OCC-PREPARED framework. The assessment focused on the core CO₂ capture and regeneration system and its general design principles.

The AiP provides H-DEUX with an independent class assessment of the concept as it progresses FlexiCapture towards further engineering, detailed design and potential onboard application. The project also contributes to the broader development of onboard carbon capture technologies as the maritime industry explores a range of solutions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from existing and future fleets
