Next-generation vessel enhances capacity and efficiency for China’s expanding automotive trade

Bureau Veritas Marine & Offshore (BV) has classed the “AICC FENGHUANG”, a dual-fuel pure car and truck carrier (PCTC) designed by Shanghai Merchant Ship Design and Research Institute (SDARI). Its shipbuilding contract was signed between Wuhu Shipyard and AICC FENGHUANG Limited. Delivered on September 29, the vessel will serve as a low-carbon, eco-friendly model at sea and play a vital role in supporting China’s rapidly growing global automotive exports.

Measuring 199.9 metres in length and 38 metres in beam, the “AICC FENGHUANG” offers capacity for 7,000 standard vehicles across 12 decks, including 4 liftable decks. The ship can accommodate passenger cars, trucks, construction machinery, and new energy vehicles, meeting rising global demand for efficient, lower-carbon automotive logistics.

The ship features a dual-fuel liquefied natural gas (LNG)/fuel oil propulsion system with two 2,000 cubic meter LNG C-type tanks, enabling flexible fuel use and significant reductions in emissions. Selective catalytic reduction (SCR) and intelligent control exhaust gas recirculation (ICER) systems further cut nitrogen oxides, sulphur oxides, and methane slip. Additional technologies such as shaft-driven generators and a high-voltage shore power system enable zero-emission operations in port. Collectively, these innovations establish the vessel as a new benchmark for green PCTCs, aligned with the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) 2050 decarbonization strategy.

As the classification society, BV worked closely with the shipyard to help ensure compliance with international standards and support the vessel’s safe delivery. Surveyors carried out strict inspections of critical roll-on/roll-off (RORO) columns, requiring 100 percent non-destructive testing (NDT), and applied defined procedures to verify the vessel’s extensive fire alarm system.
