Bureau Veritas and Hudong-Zhonghua Mark the Start of Construction of the World’s Largest 271,000 cbm LNG Carrier
Jun. 17 2026
On June 9, Bureau Veritas Marine & Offshore (BV) joined industry leaders in marking the start of construction of the world’s first batch of 271,000 cbm LNG carriers — the largest LNG carriers ever built — at Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding (Group) Co., Ltd.
Representing the next generation of ultra-large LNG carriers, the 271,000 cbm vessel marks China's first undertaking to build the world's largest LNG carrier — a landmark achievement for Hudong-Zhonghua and a milestone for the global shipbuilding industry. This commencement of construction also signifies BV's full involvement in this world-class LNGC construction program, with five more LNG carriers on order under BV class.
Often regarded as the “crown jewel” of the shipbuilding industry, LNG carriers are among the most technologically advanced and demanding vessels to design and construct. Measuring 344 meters in length, the 271,000 cbm LNG carrier incorporates the latest-generation NO96 Super+ membrane containment system and delivers significant advancements in cargo capacity, energy efficiency, environmental performance, and navigational safety.
Compared to the mainstream 174,000 cbm conventional vessel type, its cargo capacity has increased by 57%, with a daily cargo boil-off rate controlled at 0.087%, effectively reducing liquefied natural gas storage and transportation losses. The vessel features an efficient dual-fuel power system combined with a refined streamlined hull design, significantly optimizing energy consumption per unit of transport capacity and carbon emission indicators. Fully compliant with the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) Tier III environmental requirements, the vessel combines high transport capacity, low energy consumption, environmental sustainability, operational safety, and reliability. It is also compatible with most major LNG terminals worldwide, providing excellent flexibility for long-haul international trading routes.
This project represents another significant collaboration between BV and Hudong-Zhonghua, following their successful partnerships on ultra-large container vessels and LNG bunkering vessels. Building on this strong relationship, BV has established dedicated project arrangements and will provide classification and technical support throughout the construction process. Through quality assessment, technical expertise, and close cooperation with the shipyard and shipowner, BV will ensure the vessels are delivered on schedule and to standards.

The project further demonstrates Bureau Veritas’ commitment to supporting the development of advanced LNG transportation solutions and facilitating the maritime industry’s energy transition. By helping to deliver safe, efficient, and environmentally responsible vessels, BV continues to contribute to the development of global clean-energy shipping and a more sustainable maritime future.
The order for these 271,000 cbm LNG carriers has set a new global record for the value of a single LNG carrier contract. Upon delivery, the vessels will significantly enhance global LNG transportation capacity and help strengthen the resilience of the international clean energy supply chain. Backed by more than two decades of LNG carrier construction expertise, a strong orderbook, and a robust domestic supply chain, Hudong-Zhonghua is well positioned to deliver these next-generation vessels. By combining their respective strengths and expertise, BV and Hudong-Zhonghua will support the delivery of world-class LNG carriers that set new standards for the industry.
