Asia Pacific SVP Alex Gregg-Smith Wins 2025 Shanghai Magnolia Gold Award
Sep. 29 2025
Bureau Veritas Marine & Offshore (BV) is pleased to announce that Alex Gregg-Smith, Senior Vice President Marine & Offshore Asia Pacific (APA), has been awarded the 2025 Shanghai Magnolia Gold Award, the city’s highest recognition for expatriates.
The Magnolia Award is one of Shanghai’s most prestigious honors, presented to individuals who have made landmark and pioneering contributions in areas such as economic growth, international exchange, and social value creation. With only 28 international recipients this year, the recognition reflects both the weight of the award and the outstanding contributions of Alex to Shanghai and the global maritime industry.
Alex’s bond with Shanghai dates back to 1998, when he first came to the city. Over the past 27 years, he has witnessed its transformation into a global financial and shipping hub, and during this journey, he has embraced Shanghai as his “second hometown.” Since assuming leadership of BV’s China operations in 2020, he has made a personal commitment to becoming a “new Shanghainese,” learning Mandarin and integrating deeply into the city’s vibrant life and culture. His long-term dedication has been especially evident in the nurturing of young maritime talents. He has worked closely with Shanghai Maritime University and Shanghai Jiao Tong University, participating in recruitment drives, career talks, and mentorship programs that inspire students to pursue careers in shipping innovation. At the same time, he has strengthened BV’s local talent development system, ensuring that the next generation is well equipped to meet the demands of an evolving global shipping industry.
In his professional role, Alex has consistently demonstrated visionary leadership and technical expertise in maritime and offshore engineering. Under his leadership, BV’s China operation has advanced in areas critical to the industry’s future, including ship electrification, the application of alternative fuels such as hydrogen and ammonia, and the development of smart ship technologies and maritime digital systems. These initiatives not only support Shanghai’s standing as a leading international shipping hub but also help local enterprises meet International Maritime Organization (IMO) emission reduction requirements. By promoting collaboration and knowledge exchange between China and the wider international maritime community, he has played a crucial role in driving forward both technological innovation and sustainability.
The Magnolia Award is not only a personal milestone for Alex but also a collective achievement for BV. It affirms the company’s commitment to long-term investment, professional excellence, and sustainable industry leadership. As Bureau Veritas Group advances its LEAP | 28 global strategy, the award serves as a new starting point for deepening research and development, accelerating the green and intelligent transformation of shipping, and embedding Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) into every aspect of business growth.
