Introducing Jake
Jake works at MatthewsDaniel - a Bureau Veritas company - as a Senior Loss Adjuster. This role has taken him around the world and, with the support of his management, has allowed him to develop professionally and progress in his career path through a variety of different opportunities, such as sitting on various insurance market committees and giving presentations to international audiences.
Please describe your job as Senior Loss Adjuster?
As a Senior Loss Adjuster, my role is to support insurance companies in the handling and resolution of oil and gas related claims. I find that my experience working as Logging Geologist for an oil services company on drilling rigs offshore in the UK sector was the perfect lead in to this role.
What challenges do you face in your day-to-day work?
A loss adjuster needs to work with both the insurer and the insured. This can be really challenging at times because both sides can have very competing interests and can push for quite different outcomes. A loss adjuster works almost as a mediator in these situations, which requires the ability to find that fine balance that makes everybody happy. Additionally, because every claim is different, there is no one-size-fits-all solution, so every balancing act is a new challenge.
What opportunities have helped you develop your career?
I was looking for a change in career and the transition to MatthewsDaniel made sense as it allowed me to leverage the experience I had already gathered on the drilling rigs.
From the first interviews, MatthewsDaniel felt like the right fit for me, both in terms of values and people to work with. Since I started in 2014, I have been fortunate enough to learn from two great mentors that introduced me to two different styles of loss adjustment. I also feel very well supported by management, which has allowed me to achieve a promotion to Senior Loss Adjuster in 2020 and to sit on two committees within the Energy Insurance Market.
