Introducing Gurcan
Gurcan is manager of the Equipment and Materials Certification Department, where he enjoys working in a dynamic company capable of adapting to all types of challenges to continue shaping a world of trust.
Please describe your job as Manager of the Equipment and Materials Certification Department?
As Managers of the Equipment and Materials Certification Department, my job is to make sure that the material and equipment we review conforms to applicable rules and regulations. This requires the management and oversight of inspection and certification of marine equipment, the organisation and oversight of prototype tests of equipment, and attending quality approval audits of workshops and factories. It can be challenging, but it is also highly stimulating and allows to proudly remain impartial and confidential with our clients so as to gain and maintain their trust.
What challenges do you face in your day-to-day work?
The biggest challenge I face in my job is the wide variety of certifications and type tests we have to carry out for our clients. To be able to address this wide variety of requests we have to stay constantly up-to-date with all the rules and regulations in place, even those we may not be as familiar with. It can be daunting at times but it also constantly reminds us of the importance of our mission in shaping a world of trust - trust that the equipment/material will be safe. It also provides an interesting and important insight into engineering psychology.
What opportunities have helped you develop your career?
I started working at Bureau Veritas Türkiye right after I earned my degree as a Naval Architect & Marine Engineer. I found the opportunity for an internship on the university students affairs board and applied immediately. I was hired shortly after, in 2003. Over the past 17 years, Bureau Veritas has continued to offer me numerous opportunities for professional growth.
Bureau Veritas is a very people oriented company and it has supported me in my career each step of the way through training and practice. It has allowed me to feel comfortable doing my job, so that my clients could trust my expertise.

Why do you recommend working for Bureau Veritas Marine & Offshore?
Bureau Veritas is a company with strong values. Highly resilient, it has quickly and successfully adapted when the Covid-19 crisis hit the maritime world, making sure that everyone could continue to carry out their important job safely. Working for Bureau Veritas is a unique opportunity to contribute in shaping a world of trust, and I would like to address potential candidates with the following lyrics from Bob Dylan: “Don’t think twice, it’s alright.”
What do you enjoy most about working for Bureau Veritas Marine & Offshore?
Throughout the years I have always enjoyed the satisfaction that stems from successfully addressing every new certification challenge. This includes reviewing material/equipment when it is first utilized in Türkiye and making sure that it applies to both national and international rules and regulations. I was particularly proud of being part of the certification for bulletproof glass, the approval of cladding overlay welding and of fire insulated accommodation modules. Every new challenge is an opportunity to learn new skills and grow.
