Introducing:
Venessa Wei

Vanessa Wei’s experience as a plan approval engineer for passenger ships and cruise explorations vessels makes her an indispensable member of Bureau Veritas Marine & Offshore in China.

Please describe your job as a Plan Approval Engineer.

I approve vessel drawings and documentation to ensure a unit’s outfitting and structural systems comply with classification rules and international standards. I work with clients to guarantee smooth delivery of their vessels, and provide technical assistance for Bureau Veritas’ in-house marketing department.

What challenges do you face in your day-to-day work?

One of the biggest challenges for me – and the shipping industry overall – is keeping up with constantly changing technology. Many shipowners want to incorporate innovative designs and the latest technology into their vessels. My job is to ensure that new designs and innovations are compatible with vessel safety and efficiency.

What opportunities have you had to develop your career at Bureau Veritas Marine & Offshore?

I was fortunate enough to work at the head office in Paris for eighteen months. During that time, I studied engineering for passenger ships and honed my problem-solving skills. This experience gave me the skills and confidence to take on new leadership roles in China, where I am in charge of the country’s first exploration cruise ship.

What do you enjoy most about working for Bureau Veritas Marine & Offshore?

I greatly appreciate the countless ways Bureau Veritas continues to train and support me. In China, Bureau Veritas hosts regular seminars to help employees stay up-to-date on technical trends, and the head office has training and exam sessions to keep our skills sharp.

Additionally, I love the annual end-of-year party, where we celebrate our collective efforts. It’s a wonderful way to encourage employees, and allows people to show off their work.
