Vanessa Wei’s experience as a plan approval engineer for passenger ships and cruise explorations vessels makes her an indispensable member of Bureau Veritas Marine & Offshore in China.

Please describe your job as a Plan Approval Engineer.

I approve vessel drawings and documentation to ensure a unit’s outfitting and structural systems comply with classification rules and international standards. I work with clients to guarantee smooth delivery of their vessels, and provide technical assistance for Bureau Veritas’ in-house marketing department.

What challenges do you face in your day-to-day work?

One of the biggest challenges for me – and the shipping industry overall – is keeping up with constantly changing technology. Many shipowners want to incorporate innovative designs and the latest technology into their vessels. My job is to ensure that new designs and innovations are compatible with vessel safety and efficiency.
