A new powerful modeling tool enables Bureau Veritas to cut design review times. The solution, based on Dassault Systèmes’ 3DEXPERIENCE platform, builds a detailed 3D model of the vessel to be built. The model interfaces with structural and stability Bureau Veritas calculation tools. Our objective: to improve our own efficiency and cut design review times.

  • The 3D model optimizes the calculation process by interfacing directly with Bureau Veritas structural and stability software
  • It improves accuracy and reduces structural computational and verification times for large vessels, as no data has to be entered twice
  • It can be used as the starting point to build a digital twin for use in asset management throughout the ship’s lifecycle

Efficient compliance

The 3D model cuts unnecessary steps out of the design review process. We build a single 3D model, which interfaces directly with our structural and stability tools: Veristar Hull, MARS2000 and Veristar Stability. Modifications to the ship are automatically updated in each tool, saving time and accuracy. This feature also benefits yards who choose to adopt the 3DEXPERIENCE platform.

Reduce the complexity of CSR-H compliance

IACS’ Common Structural Rules for tankers and bulk carriers impose finite element computation of the whole cargo area. Using the 3D model tool, together with Veristar Hull, Bureau Veritas can reduce complexity and save time for designers and verifiers.

Towards 3D classification

3D models have numerous potential uses throughout the ship’s life, one of which is 3D classification. Today, we build a 3D model based on a 2D drawing provided by the shipyard: tomorrow we aim to use the shipyard’s own 3D model as the basis for classification. At Bureau Veritas, we are working actively towards this goal, building on our own experience of numerical tools and our strong relationships with yards.
